911- Rittika Adhikari
1:00 AM
the witching hour
silhouettes creeping over the brick walls
as she walked
fingers nestled in her grey sweatshirt
her friend was gone
disappeared into oblivion
she was
alone.
or so she thought
but the darkness
was closer than it appeared
she let out a tentative cry
and hands muffled her mouth
blocking her airways
he saw the fear in her eyes
and smiled
with his ugly yellowed teeth
she was weak
couldn’t fight
foul smelling chemicals
stinging in her nose
and she was
asleep.
***
she woke up
splinters pricking at her
poking out from the wooden chair
the 6 shadows
beamed down at her
greedy
her mouth was free
she let out a scream
quickly muffled
by filthy cloth
but she heard someone’s footsteps
pitter pat
the shadows embraced her
forced her to look at them
left her cold, barefoot
but there he was
her savior
he dropped a glass bottle
they jumped back
“whaddya think you’re doing, runt?”
the shadows demanded
the largest one started to close in on him
the angel’s eyes were scared
not fierce
but wham
the shadow started to bleed
a cry of anger, yearning for revenge
pierced the night
he untied her
murmured into her ear
and held her hand
as she ran, barefoot
glass sinking into her feet
her only trace
was her blood
and a tattered grey sweatshirt
***
she knew the angel
he was scared
“get on the motorcycle”
he shouted
she gripped him tight
like she had so many times before
his heart
thump thump
bright white lights
straight towards them
he tried to swerve
“jump”
she jumped
tumbling onto the
pavement
bloodied cheeks
she saw yellowed teeth
gleaming at her
from the truck
she let out a cry
but it was too late
the angel had fallen
she ran over
“i love you”
she wept
“you’re beautiful”
he whispered
“don’t leave me”
he gripped her hand
she curled herself over him
and dialed 911
