Classroom Musings in 17 Syllables -- Anonymous
Yellow bus pulls up
Sullen students spilling out
Why no happy smiles?
Leaves blowing around
Whirlwind-trapped between the walls
How can they break free?
Earbuds and white wires
Thumbs always seeking new sounds
Music in your mind
Plug those earbuds in
Crank up the melodic vibes
Helps the work go down
Buds in one ear
Still can hear the teacher's voice
Must be good students
Pollen on the deck
Trees paint their lime green magic
Until the next rain
Bright springtime morning
Why such a chill in the air
Get cranking, sunshine.
If feeders are full
Bears rampage to get the seed
Birds must go without.
This class is on task
Pencils scratching out knowledge
Such clever students
Wrappers on the floor
Put leftovers in the bin
Compost fruit only
The test is over
I could study for English
But Fornite calls out
Nasty fan belt squeal
This Ford has seen better days
But it starts, brakes work.
Haiku when we're bored,
Though Will would turn up his nose
We are all poets
Drawing at our own feet,
Should our shoes be on or off
Art class should not smell
No more wasted time,
My cell phone is always here
Don't have time to think
There is no more time
Turn in your essay papers
Was it really tough?
Put cell phones away
Focus on today's worksheet,
You can get it done
The headline jumps out
Another atrocity,
Will it ever end?
Stuck in study hall
Without anything to read
Time for some haiku
Sitting here alone
Trying to craft a haiku
Basho I am not
Time for morning break
Hungry students everywhere
Who brought the donuts?
Calculators out
The calculus test begins
Time to saddle up.
Blood splatter patterns
Could anything be more fun?
More gore hits the spot.
Hamlet got it wrong
Ignore the ghosts of the past
Don't need tragedy
Should be raking leaves
They were coming down like snow
Maybe tomorrow
Time for the exam
Clear the desks of all your stuff
Now you need the facts
Biology class
Cells, chromosomes, DNA
What we are made of
Maple trees are bare
Leaves scattered by frigid winds
Hidden soon by snow
Very quiet now
Snow sifting without a sound
Then a screeching plow
Pine trees through the sleet
Festooned with garlands of ice
Don't they feel the cold?
Where are the answers?
Always check the Internet
Google Classroom knows
Cytoskeletons
How do they relate to cells?
Bio students know
Huck Finn understood
No need to be civilized
Just go with the flow
In Lord of the Flies
Boys can be nasty and cruel
Is that our nature?
J. Alfred Prufrock's
Scuttling pairs of ragged claws
What chance of romance?
Can't read here in class.
Unless wrapped in my blanket
Printed words won't track
Artwork in the halls
Such talented students here
These walls speak volumes
In Afghanistan
The girl with clear blue eyes
Still there, all these years
Desks set in neat rows
This classroom is looking good
Ready to shape minds
Boots made for walking
Could be walking over me
Try to keep them clean
